I was born and raised in the Flin Flon area. Although I took it for granted when I was young, the older I get, the more I appreciate how very lucky I've been to be surrounded by such rugged beauty. Boreal Birches was one of my first attempts to render our land using the rugged medium of raku. I worked in copper/zinc mining for over 30 years so I associate the area with the copper hues I can obtain in raku stains and metallics. In my tiles, I like to contrast the hard lines and structure of the taped borders with the unpredictability that is raku. You never know what you're going to get!
